Methodology
Using the US App Store as a benchmark, we track subscription prices for a curated basket of popular apps across different countries and regions. For each app, we match the identical plan tier, convert the local price to USD using exchange rates updated daily, and calculate its relative price difference against the US baseline. The median percentage difference across all sampled apps in a given country is then used to determine its overall Price Index.
Worked example: Netflix Standard in Turkey
Every app enters once, at its representative plan: the one its own price page compares, such as Netflix Standard. A store’s price is used only when it lists that plan on the same billing period as the US store.
₺289,99/mo United States$19.99/mo The local price is converted to US dollars at the day’s reference rate, then set against the US price: dollar price ÷ US price − 1.
₺289,99 ÷ 49.05 TRY/USD = $5.91 Against the US price$5.91 ÷ $19.99 − 1 = −70% Repeat for every matched app in the country and take the middle value. A median rather than an average, so one mispriced app barely moves the result.
free listings dropped
A $0 price is a listing error or a free tier, never a subscription price.
prices set aside “to verify”
A price more than three times the app’s median across countries or at odds with the store’s own listing, or any price of an app whose US price fails either check, stays in the full lists but out of every figure.
apps reviewed by hand
When a store lists a different plan under the same name, or labels a yearly price as monthly, that price is set aside until it is read again.
apps with storefront snapshots
For 88 of the 144 apps, the product page keeps the raw store record behind each price, with the time it was read.
| Data | How often | Read from |
|---|---|---|
| App Store prices | Headline apps daily, watched apps every 3 days, the rest every 15 days | Each country’s App Store storefront |
| Vendor prices | Daily | The vendors’ own price pages |
| Exchange rates | Daily | Published USD reference rates |
| Purchasing power | When the IMF publishes, in April and October | IMF World Economic Outlook |
| This page | Rebuilt whenever new prices land | — |
The price level is the IMF’s implied PPP conversion rate divided by the market exchange rate (World Economic Outlook, April 2026; US = 100%). The ratio divides each app’s dollar price by the US price scaled to that level and takes the median. ×1 means subscriptions are priced in line with the country’s general price level; India, at ×3.42, pays 3.42 times what its price level would suggest. The IMF figures are yearly estimates, so they lag a sudden fall in a currency.
A country is ranked once at least 30 of its subscriptions can be matched to the US. Today that is 18 countries, with 112 to 144 matched apps each. Below that, the map still shows the country and the prices we have, but no percentage: a median of a handful of apps would describe those apps, not the country.
