Our capability scores combine data from two independent, well-respected sources:

• Arena ELO (70% weight) — a crowdsourced rating where real users compare AI models head-to-head in blind tests and vote on which response they prefer. Over millions of human votes, this produces an ELO rating (like chess) that reflects real-world user preference.
• Artificial Analysis Index (30% weight) — a standardised benchmark suite measuring intelligence, coding ability, and generation quality across consistent test conditions.

Both scores are merged on a 5-point scale using these weights. The result is a single capability score shown on each tool's row. You can hover over any score badge to see the individual Arena and Artificial Analysis values.

Arena.ai (formerly LMArena / Chatbot Arena) is an open platform run by researchers at UC Berkeley's LMSYS group. It collects millions of anonymous, pairwise human preference votes by showing users two AI model outputs side by side without revealing which model produced which response. Users pick the better answer, and the results are aggregated into an ELO rating system — the same method used in competitive chess. Arena covers text, code, image generation, video generation, and search categories.

Artificial Analysis is an independent AI benchmarking platform that evaluates 400+ AI models across standardised test suites. They publish an Intelligence Index for general reasoning, a Coding Index for programming tasks, and ELO scores for image and video generation quality. Their methodology uses controlled, reproducible testing — complementing Arena's crowdsourced approach with objective, lab-condition measurements.

Each source has different strengths:

• Arena captures what real users prefer in practice — including nuances like tone, helpfulness, and creativity that benchmarks struggle to measure. But it can be influenced by model popularity and prompt style.
• Artificial Analysis provides objective, reproducible scores under controlled conditions — but lab benchmarks don't always reflect real-world performance.

By combining both (70% Arena / 30% AA), we balance human preference signals with objective measurement, giving you a more reliable overall picture than either source alone.

Scores are updated automatically via GitHub Actions:

• Arena ELO scores — refreshed weekly (every Wednesday)
• Artificial Analysis scores — refreshed weekly (every Monday)
• App Store pricing — refreshed twice a month (1st and 15th)
• Exchange rates — updated daily

The automation always fetches the strongest/latest model version for each brand (e.g., if GPT-5 and GPT-4o both appear on Arena, we take the higher-scoring one).

We currently compare AI tools across 6 categories:

• Best AI for Coding — code generation, debugging, and developer tools
• Best AI Image Generators — text-to-image creation quality
• Best AI Video Generators — text-to-video and image-to-video
• Best AI Search Engines — AI-powered search and research tools

Each category uses the most relevant benchmark data. For example, the Coding category uses Arena's Code ELO and AA's Coding Index, while Image uses Arena's Text-to-Image ELO and AA's image generation ELO.
